What is Shiatsu

Shiatsu massage is a form of Eastern Medicine which has been popular in Japan for almost a century and is now rapidly gaining acceptance throughout the Western World. 

Literally “Shiatsu” means finger pressure. The philosophy behind this technique involves bringing the body flow, or ‘ki’ ( breath, life force) into harmony through massage and gentle manipulation.

Going to a Shiatsu session is a useful exercise whether you regard yourself to be in good health or have a serious illness. For example it is useful if you suffer from irritating mild headaches, which Western Medicine tends not to treat with great importance. Symptoms like these tend to be the body’s early warning system of things to come. 

Through Shiatsu, you can find out what parts of or body aren’t functioning properly and how emotional problems like depression may manifest in your body. Paying attention to chronic conditions is important as they often take a long time to manifest.

Western Medicine treats symptoms and allows the cause to stay the same. The problem can still be there after treatment with drugs and surgery. The person’s total health can actually drop and they end up having stronger symptoms. Shiatsu Therapy is about lifting a person’s level of health so that the symptoms can’t be be there. Ninety-nine percent of the time Shiatsu does not even look at the symptoms but looks to where the cause is coming from. 


What to expect from your treatment

One part of the treatment is based on diagnosing the body’s energy system in a holistic approach. The practitioner feels around the soft tummy area, referred to as “hara”, to assess how the energy is flowing and where there are any blockages or sluggish areas. 

Illness does not just happen. Your energy is wrong all the time and you feel sick. Slowly it gets worse and worse but it does not happen suddenly.

Another step in the assessment involves looking at the back area. Shiatsu diagnoses and treats the whole back area for emotional or relationship disorders. If you have had some kind of programming that tells you always to be angry at everyone, as a normal relationship process, certain areas of the back will be distorted. 

The next step in the process is the actual massage. The nature of the massage will depend on which organs aren’t functioning properly and need rebalancing of energies. Likewise , problems related to various emotions will also be treated The treatment usually involves the full body and head region. As it is a therapeutic treatment , it is not simply aimed at relaxing muscles but more at relieving physical blockages and problems.
